Paul McCartney to make a rare festival appearance at Bonnaroo

Wings legend Sir Paul McCartney is making a rare festival appearance as he was announced to be the headline act for the Tennessee’s 2013 Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival.

More used to sporadic bursts of touring than playing to crowds not specifically paying to see him, Paul McCartney has surprised everyone by being announced as the headliner for the Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival held between 13th and 16th of June.

Each year there are recurring rumors that Macca will play each and every festival going, but time and time again fans are disappointed when his name isn’t announced for their favourite. This should be of no surprise however, as since the turn of the century he has only played 8 festivals (or 6 if you don’t count the relatively miniscule iTunes and Electric Proms festivals) with Bonnaroo lined up to be his ninth:

28/05/2004 – Rock In Rio Festival (Portugal)
26/06/2004 – Glastonbury Festival (UK)
05/07/2007 – iTunes Festival (UK)
25/10/2007 – BBC Electric Proms Festival (UK)
17/04/2009 – Coachella Festival (USA)
13/06/2010 – Isle Of Wight Festival (UK)
27/06/2010 – Hard Rock Calling (UK)
13/11/2011 – Yaslaam Festival (UAE)
16/06/2013 – Bonnaroo Festival (USA)

McCartney has made several impromptu festival appearances over the years: In 2009 he attended Neil Young’s Hard Rock Calling show before heading on stage (slightly drunk) to duet with him on The Beatles classic A Day In The Life. In 2011 he popped up at the Coachella festival, dancing with Usher at the side of the stage during Afrojack’s DJ set. Then finally in 2012 he helped close Bruce Springsteen’s set by dueting with him on I Saw Her Standing There and Twist And Shout before the city council infamously pulled the plug on the gig.

The full list of acts confirmed to be playing the 3-day Bonnaroo festival were announced by comedian Weird Al Yankovic during an hour long live broadcast on YouTube. Other acts on the diverse bill include Mumford & Sons, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Wilco, Billy Idol, ZZ Top, R Kelly and Bjork.

The annual Bonnaroo festival that has been running since 2002 is held on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, with an average attendance of around 100,000.

Tickets will go on sale at 12pm EST on the 23rd February from the official Bonnaroo website.

  2. I find it interesting that you refer to McCartney as “Wings legend” with no mention of the Beatles. I guess this is just further confirmation that I’m getting old! : )
