Where The Bayonets’ massively successful first single Sucker For Love was a straightforwards highly radio friendly and immensely commercial song, Smartphone displays the indie bands more earthy, grimy, and menacing side.
While the song opens with a Wild Western showdown kind of guitar, complete with fingers-twitching-by-the-holstered-gun maracas, the grimy distorted single note Morse code-like guitar riff soon kicks in.
The verses are sparse with Brian’s vocals set against Oliver Leiber’s pounding drums while the chorus turns Smartphone into a good old fashioned fun and bouncy rocker. An interesting element is the sprinkling of futuristic electronic bleep-y kind of sounds throughout, creating a strangely pleasing juxtaposition.
As with Sucker For Love, Lucrecia López Sanz’s backing vocals on Smartphone stand out and add a feminine touch to an otherwise quite frank and bolshy (in a good way) song. Incidentally any fans of the only lady-Bayonet can look forwards to future singles in which Lucrecia handles some lead vocals…!
Smartphone can stand proudly alongside the Bayonets’ high flying debut single, being just as good (if not a little better) than it’s predecessor. And this is presumably why Steven Van Zandt has already named it his “coolest song in the world” on his Underground Garage Radio show on SiriusXM where it will be on maximum rotation for the next 8 weeks!
Smartphone is available as a MP3 download to buy from www.thebayonets.com and www.brianray.com. It will be released worldwide via iTunes on May 20th. You can also get The Bayonets’ smash hit debut single Sucker For Love from these places too!
And if that wasn’t enough you can get your hands on an exclusive bundle: the Smartphone MP3 download AND T-Shirt combo for only $25. This offer will only be running for a limited time, so don’t wait if you wanna score!
Oh and while you’re at it, be sure to check out The Bayonets’ Wikipedia (here) page where you can find out all the info on the members and their music!
So who knows what the next few months has in store The Bayonets and how much success their new single will bring them, but one thing is for certain: With the awesome one-two punch of Sucker For Love and Smartphone, single number three Whatcha Got is sure to be a knockout…!
