Coldplay’s first single from their upcoming studio album Ghost Stories is the is the experimental ambience rock track Midnight. Slow, spacey, and trippy, Midnight does not pretend to be the usual ‘classic’ Coldplay pop song, instead electing to head in a new direction.
Over the years Coldplay have been consistent almost to a fault: While they may not be everyone’s cup of tea they have written consistently good songs, to the point that they seem to be stuck in a musical rut, writing songs that sound too same-old-same-old to some ears.
Luckily Midnight has taken a step in a new direction. More atmospheric and an experiment in space and sound, the ‘song’ is almost an afterthought. Though that is not to say it is a bad song at all. An equally offbeat experimental music video can be found at the end of this post.
Chris Martin’s vocals have also been run through a vocoder to great effect, giving the lead vocals a electronic robot kind of feel that suits the style of song.
While it may not be to everyone’s taste, Midnight displays the bands willingness to step out of their comfort zone, conduct their musical experiments and see how everyone reacts. Is it different? Yes. Will the musical experiment be successful? Time will tell. But you have to applaud the fact that a pretty middle of the road non-controversial band has been willing to take a risk and try something new.
The album Ghost Stories is due for release on May 19th. You can keep up to date with Coldplay by visiting their official website.
