Gareth Edwards, director of the new Godzilla reboot, has been announced as the director of the very first Star Wars spinoff, rumored to focus on the fearsome mercenary, bounty hunter and fan favorite, Boba Fett.
Asside from the recently released Godzilla movie (review here), the relatively new director has helmed very few movies. However after the widespread positive reaction to his latest cinematic offering, hopes are high that he can capture the same spark with the Star Wars spinoff.
In a statement on the movies official website they cited Gareth as saying: “Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm!”
The screenplay for the spinoff is being written by Gary Whitta, whose screenwriting credits include 2010’s massively successful The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington.
While the internet is already awash with rumors as to which of the pre existing characters the spinoff will be based around, the clear-cut frontrunner is the mysterious yet deadly armored assassin Boba Fett. Speaking a grand total of only 29 words in the original trilogy (27 in The Empire Strikes Back and 2 in Return of the Jedi), he has since gained a cult following – much to the surprise of original Star Wars director George Lucas.
Other characters in the running include Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi (played by Sir Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor) and Episode I’s silent Sith lord Darth Maul.
The Star Wars spinoff is set to be released on December 16th 2016 – just under a year after the release of the highly anticipated Star Wars Episode VII directed by J.J. Abrams.
