JJ Abrams 'denial' confirms return of iconic Star Wars ship

Days after leaked images of a half built full-sized Millennium Falcon from the set of Star Wars Episode VII hit the net, director JJ Abrams issued a tongue-in-cheek ‘denial’ that the iconic spaceship would appear…photographed on top of a games table famously from the classic craft.

The note from the usually secretive director reads: “I wish people would stop leaking photos from Episode VII and making ridiculous claims that the Millennium Falcon is in the movie. JJ“. At first glance it seems like a flat out hissy fit of a denial, but on closer inspection eagle eyed fans will see it’s on top of the Millennium Falcon’s Dejarik board (a holographic form of chess!)

The game featured in the original 1977 film A New Hope when Chewbacca and R2 D2 played a game which resulted in the Wookiee losing…only for the vessels captain Han Solo to warn the droids “it’s not wise to upset a wookiee…a droid don’t pull peoples arms out of their sockets when they lose!”

While the director usually tries to make sure that nothing is released or leaked without his say so, in this day and age of smartphones with built in discreet cameras it is an increasingly difficult task that is near impossible to police.

So despite his best efforts, photographs of the semi-constructed Falcon (which can be seen below) and several other props and sets made their way into the public domain and onto the internet. However in a classic JJ Abrams master-stroke he twisted the leak to his advantage, offering both a denial and a confirmation, all while cleverly building the hype for the highly anticipated movie even further.

Star Wars Episode VII is due for release December 18th, 2015.
