Single review: RJ Thompson – House Upon The Hill

Single review: RJ Thompson - House Upon The HillSinger songwriter RJ Thompson is back with his brand new single House Upon The Hill. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne musician pours an intriguing mix of indie soul into his latest offering, creating a memorably fresh sounding track.

Based around a catchy vocal riff, House Upon The Hill is a fairly minimalist and starkly honest single. With only sparing guitars and synthesizers, the track is driven along by an insentient drumbeat and warmly yearning vocal performance.

More lethargically paced than RJ’s previous single The Numbers (review here), the new song is in no way less effective than it’s more overtly catchy and poppy predecessor.

A music video to House Upon The Hill has also been released. Shot by film-maker Ian West, it stars actors Eliza Davison and Jacob Ward as well as RJ Thompson and his cracking four-piece band. You can check out the video at the end of this post.

An EP also titled House Upon The Hill will be released on November 24th, featuring the title track as well as four other songs: No Man’s LandBorn AloneThe Numbers and Cannery Row.
