Single review: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Ballad of the Mighty I

Single review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Ballad of the Mighty IThe second single from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ upcoming album Chasing Yesterday is the moodily funky Ballad of the Mighty I. Featuring The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and several unconventional chord changes, it is a melancholic yet up-tempo single.

With the verses consisting of a prominent staccato bass line, disco-y drums and an occasional chords from a crunching guitar or ambient piano, Noel delivers an almost eerie vocal that soars over the music.

As the song opens up to the chorus a flurry of icy harmonies and backing vocals fall neatly into place before being sucked away as the song ploughs into another verse, crisp guitar solo or shimmering instrumental.

Speaking about working with The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, Noel said: “I tried to get him to play on the last album but it never happened”. He also revealed that Marr agreed to feature on the track without hearing it beforehand, claiming that he “helped make [Ballad of the Mighty I] one of the best songs [he’s] ever written.”

A music video for Ballad of the Might I  has also been released, which you can find at the end of this post. You can also read a review of the albums first single, In The Heat Of The Moment here. Chasing Yesterday will be released on March 2nd.
