Single review: Rihanna feat Kanye West & Paul McCartney – FourFiveSeconds

Single review: Rihanna feat Kanye West & Paul McCartney - FourFiveSecondsRihanna’s first single in exactly a year is the simple, country/pop FourFiveSeconds. Featuring Sir Paul McCartney on guitar, organ and bass, Rihanna and Kanye West share clean, stripped-back and refreshingly unprocessed lead vocals.

The song switches from guitar to whirling organ for a soaring bridge, before trailing off back to the acoustic to finish the track off. Rihanna’s voice sits lightly and powerfully on top of the guitar, and Kanye, instead of his usual rapping, takes a more melodic approach and sings the song.

FourFiveSeconds is a nice change of direction for both Rihanna and Kanye, and the fact that Paul is there to lend some of his undeniable musical talent and experience is also great. However while many hardcore Macca fans are calling his recent collaborations a step backwards, the fact is Paul is just as lucky to be working with such big-named, popular and relevant artists as they are to be working with him.

This single marks Kanye’s second collaboration with Paul McCartney, the first being the equally simple and stripped-back Only One (review here). The most recent track, however, is the stronger of the two. It has also been revealed that Paul is to feature on and co-produce Kanye’s upcoming album.

You can download FourFiveSeconds now from iTunes and all good digital media outlets. You can keep up to date with Rihanna by visiting her official website.
