The Bayonets are back with their first single since the release their debut album Crash Boom Bang! The all new Christmas Time Is Cruel is a yearning, mid-tempo rock song featuring both Brian Ray and Lucrecia Lopez Sanz on lead vocals.
Christmas Time Is Cruel opens with a nice mid-tempo piano riff which features throughout and really drives the song along. While I am in no way complaining about The Bayonets’ fantastic tried and tested guitar-centric sound, it’s still nice to hear some good, honest-to-god piano in one of their songs!
The vocals mix together brilliantly. Brian’s low verse melody lingers before building up modulating and sprawling out as Lucrecia joins him in the more euphoric choruses that cleverly belie the songs title.
Brian Ray handles lead vocals, guitars and piano, Oliver Leiber is back behind the drums (and sleigh bells) providing a solid beat, and Lucrecia Lopez Sanz adds her exotically sexy vocals to the mix. Additionally the track features Paul Bushnell on electric bass, John Button on acoustic upright bass, and Matt Laug handling percussion.
Christmas Time Is Cruel was both written and produced by Oliver and Brian and recorded mid-September by Niko Bolas with mixing done by Joe Zook.
Brian brilliantly describes the song as “a homage to Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’ recording style. A ‘Garage of Sound’ if you will!”
I think all in all The Bayonets have managed to put out a fantastic track that has a seasonal, festive touch while maintaining the band’s cool Californian indie-rock sound. An odd and brave combination…but it works like a charm!
